Pool Maintenance in a Tropical Climate
Owning a pool in Singapore means dealing with year-round warmth, heavy rainfall, and high humidity — conditions that accelerate algae growth, chemical consumption, and equipment wear. A consistent maintenance routine is the difference between a sparkling pool and an expensive headache.

Water Chemistry Basics
Test your water at least twice a week. The key parameters: pH should stay between 7.2 and 7.6 (lower than many people think), free chlorine between 1.0 and 3.0 ppm, and total alkalinity between 80 and 120 ppm. Singapore's rainfall tends to dilute chemicals and lower pH, so you'll need to adjust more frequently during wet periods.
Invest in a quality digital test kit rather than test strips. The accuracy difference matters when maintaining tight chemical balances. A good kit costs $80–$150 and pays for itself by reducing chemical waste.
Filtration and Circulation
Run your pump for at least 8 hours daily — ideally during off-peak electricity hours (11pm–7am) to save on utilities. Your filtration system should turn over the entire pool volume at least once per day.
Clean or backwash your filter when pressure rises 8–10 psi above the clean baseline. For sand filters, this is typically every 2–4 weeks. Cartridge filters should be chemically cleaned monthly and replaced annually.
Skimming and Brushing
Singapore's lush vegetation means leaves, flowers, and organic debris constantly enter your pool. Skim the surface daily and empty skimmer baskets twice a week. Use a robotic pool cleaner for floor debris — they're energy-efficient and thorough.
Brush tile lines and walls weekly to prevent algae and calcium buildup. Pay extra attention to shaded areas and waterline tiles where algae establishes first.

DIY maintenance handles day-to-day upkeep, but some tasks require professional equipment and expertise: annual equipment servicing, tile re-grouting, pump and motor replacement, leak detection, and acid washing.
