Why Install an Auto Gate?
An automatic gate is one of the first upgrades many landed property owners consider. Beyond the obvious convenience of not stepping out in the rain to open your gate, a quality auto gate enhances security, adds kerb appeal, and can increase your property value.
In Singapore, where most landed homes have driveways, an auto gate is practically a necessity. Modern systems integrate with intercoms, CCTV, and smart home systems for seamless access control.
Types of Auto Gates
Swing gates are the most common for Singapore landed homes. They open inward or outward on hinges, requiring clearance space but offering a classic look. They work well with most driveway layouts and are typically the most affordable option.
Sliding gates run along a track parallel to your boundary wall. They're ideal for properties with limited driveway depth or sloped driveways where swing gates aren't practical. They require more wall space beside the opening.
Folding gates (also called bi-fold) collapse in sections, requiring minimal clearance in any direction. They're the best solution for tight spaces but tend to be more expensive and mechanically complex.
Materials and Design
Aluminium is the most popular material in Singapore due to its corrosion resistance, light weight, and low maintenance. Powder-coated aluminium gates can mimic wood grain or come in any RAL colour.
Mild steel offers more design flexibility and strength but requires regular maintenance to prevent rust in Singapore's humid climate. Stainless steel (grade 304 or 316) is the premium choice — virtually maintenance-free but significantly more expensive.
Timber gates offer a warm, natural aesthetic but demand the most maintenance. Many homeowners opt for aluminium gates with wood-look finishes to get the appearance without the upkeep.
Cost Breakdown
A basic single-panel aluminium swing gate with motor starts from $3,500 to $5,000. Mid-range systems with custom designs, intercom integration, and safety sensors typically cost $6,000 to $12,000. Premium installations with stainless steel, smart home integration, and backup battery systems can reach $15,000 to $25,000.
Installation usually takes 3–5 days including hacking of existing gate posts, new pillar construction, motor installation, and electrical works. Budget an additional $500–$1,500 for electrical and minor civil works.
Safety and Compliance
All auto gates in Singapore should include safety features: infrared sensors to detect obstructions, auto-reverse mechanisms, and manual release for power failures. While there's no specific BCA requirement for residential auto gates, these features are essential for family safety.
If your gate swings outward over a public footpath, you'll need to ensure it doesn't obstruct pedestrian traffic when open. Some estates have additional guidelines — check with your estate management before installation.
