The Mobility Question
As Singapore's population ages, more landed homeowners are looking at mobility solutions that let them stay in their homes longer. The two main options — stairlifts and home lifts — serve the same basic purpose but differ significantly in cost, space requirements, and capability.
The right choice depends on your specific situation: current and anticipated mobility needs, your home's layout, budget, and how long you plan to stay in the property.
Stairlifts: The Practical Choice
A stairlift is a motorised chair that travels along a rail mounted to your staircase. Installation typically takes half a day with minimal structural modification. Costs range from $8,000 to $18,000 for straight staircases and $15,000 to $30,000 for curved or multi-flight configurations.
Stairlifts are ideal when only one household member needs assistance, the mobility issue is moderate (can transfer to/from a seated position), and budget is a primary concern. They preserve your home's layout with minimal visual impact when folded.
The main limitation: stairlifts require the user to sit and ride the chair. They're not suitable for wheelchair users or those with severe mobility restrictions. They also can't transport heavy items between floors.
Home Lifts: The Long-Term Investment
A home lift provides step-free, barrier-free access between floors. Users simply walk or wheel into the cabin and press a button. Costs range from $45,000 to $120,000+ depending on the number of stops, drive system, and finishing.
Home lifts are the better choice when wheelchair accessibility may be needed (now or in future), multiple household members need easier access, you want to future-proof your home comprehensively, and the property value increase justifies the investment.
The trade-off is cost and space. Home lifts require a shaft (typically 1.2m × 1.2m minimum footprint), potential structural modifications, and BCA approval. Installation takes 4–8 weeks.
Property Value Impact
A home lift typically adds $50,000–$80,000 to a property's resale value in Singapore — often more than the installation cost. Stairlifts add minimal resale value and are usually removed before sale.
If you're in your forever home, this matters less. But if there's any chance of selling within 10–15 years, a home lift is the stronger financial decision.

For immediate, moderate mobility needs with budget constraints, a stairlift is the sensible starting point. For comprehensive, long-term accessibility — especially in homes with three or more floors — a home lift provides greater capability and better return on investment.
